Sue Wiegrefe, Houston Nature Center Manager
Sue’s background is in ornamental horticulture, a field in which she spent almost a decade as a Tree Breeder for the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. She then picked up additional skills in instruction and curriculum development as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant and Earth Science at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. More recently, she worked as a Research Assistant for Badgersett Research Corporation, a firm breeding and selecting hybrid nut varieties. She began working for the City of Houston as a Greeter at the Nature Center in May 2016 and was hired as Manager in mid-August of that year.
Connie Verse, Nature Center Assistant Manager
She has an associate degree in marketing and supportive classes in accounting. Connie started working at the Houston Nature Center in September of 2009 as a volunteer. She later became paid staff under the Experience Works Program. Under direction of the former Director Karla Bloem, she managed many programs and events in addition to assisting with the day to day operations. Connie was instrumental to the success of the International Owl Fest and the Friends of the Nature Center organization. In February of this year, 2015, she was hired by the City of Houston to manage the Nature Center. She stepped down from that position in August 2016, but continues to be a significant asset to the Nature Center – sometimes as her alter-ego, Grandma Nature.
